Madrona

Award: Maureen Bekemeyer, a 40-year resident considered the “mayor of 38th Avenue,” is the recipient of the Madrona Community Council’s Nora Award, which honors someone who has left a personal mark on the community.

Bekemeyer organizes Night Out block parties and dinners, manages a neighborhood e-mail list, welcomes new neighbors and visits with those in need or who are ill. 

She also has served on the Genesis House board for more than a decade.

Summer ballet: Dancer Dakota Wear has been selected to attend American Ballet Theatre’s 2013 summer intensive.

Publication: Shannon Huffman Polson has released her newest book, “North of Hope: A Daughter’s Arctic Journey” (www.aborderlife.com) on April 9. 

The book is a memoir of the time following her parents’ death in a grizzly bear attack.

 

Madison Park

Nomination: Madison Park resident Kathleen O’Connor has been nominated for the Golden Tennis Shoe Award. She writes “The O’Connor Report,” which provides “insights and commentaries on health care today.”

The award recognizes Washingtonians who are improving their community. This is the 18th year Sen. Patty Murray has presented these awards.
