Kids triathalon draws scores of young athletes to Seward Park

Nearly 300 children participated in the triathlon on Sunday, July 16, at Seward Park. The race featured two categories: splashers with a 50 yard swim, 1 mile bike and .2 mile run; and dashers with a 100 yard swim, 2 mile bike and .4 mile run. All participants received a t-shirt and finishers medal. The $15 entry fee for each child raised money for juvenile diabetes research at the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason Hospital. Earlier in the morning (7 a.m.) adult triathletes took to the water and road at Seward Park for the Benaroya Institute Triathlon at Seafair. The "sprint distance" triathlon featured a 1/2-mile swim in Lake Washington, a 12-mile bike ride down Lake Washington Boulevard onto the I-90 express lanes to Mercer Island and back to the park, and a 3.1-mile (5K) run on the lower loop at Seward Park.
