Mayor recognizes strong middle school students

Mayor Greg Nickels recently awarded this year's scholar awards to 24 middle school students for service to their respective schools and communities. Based on a criteria of overcoming major obstacles or meeting challenges, giving back to the community and maintaining good academic standing, the students received $500 each for further education or their charity of choice.

One student will be awarded the Mayor's Leadership Award of $2500 towards a four-year university, community or technical college.

Recipients include Keano DeBari (sixth grade), Jymaika Hutson (sixth grade), Chantell Jackson (eighth grade), Desiree Vann (sixth grade) and Jeremy Villars (seventh grade) of African American Academy and Mandy Kwan, an 8th grader at Asa Mercer Middle School.

Students were selected after submitting short essays outlining their community contributions and how they would use their awards. Awards were coordinated by the city's Office of Education, a division of the Department of Neighborhoods and funded entirely through private donations to the nonprofit Alliance for Education.
