UW at Forefront of suicide prevention

The University of Washington is commemorating World Suicide Prevention Day with the launch of its Forefront: Innovations in Suicide Prevention collaboration on Tuesday, Sept. 10. A fund-raiser will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the UW’s Lyceum Room of the Husky Union Building (HUB).

Rep. Tina Orwall (D-33rd District) will receive Forefront’s inaugural public-service award. She helped to build a statewide coalition of suicide-prevention experts and survivors of suicide loss to enact a training requirement for mental-health professionals in Washington state.

According to Forefront, nearly 1,000 people died by suicide in the state in 2011, more than twice the number of traffic deaths and five times the number of homicides in the same period.
