Intiman Theatre has announced a special advance screening of the Mike Nichols-directed HBO film "Angels in America: Millennium Approaches," the first of two parts of the highly anticipated movie adaptation of Tony Kushner's epic play, on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. The screening will take place at the Cinerama, 2100 Fourth Ave., and will be Seattle's only opportunity to see the three-hour film on a big screen.
The showing is free and open to the public. However, a minimum suggested donation of $15 is requested. Proceeds will support Intiman The-atre and local HIV/AIDS services provided by AIDS Housing of Washington and Lifelong AIDS Alliance.
Patrons are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance at 269-1901, ext. 345, with a two-tickets-per-person limit. The Cinerama doors will open at 6 p.m.; seating is first-come, first-served.
Tony Kushner wrote the screenplay for (and makes a cameo appearance in) Nichols' film. The cast includes Al Pacino as Roy Cohn, Meryl Streep as Hannah Pitt and Ethel Rosenberg, Emma Thompson as the Angel, Mary-Louise Parker as Harper Pitt and Jeffrey Wright as Belize, a role he created on Broadway.
The film will show in two parts on the HBO premium cable service, on Dec. 7 ("Millennium Approaches") and Dec. 14 ("Perestroika"), repeating on other dates throughout December and January.
Intiman was the first theater in the country granted the rights to produce "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes" after it won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 1993 and 1994 Tony Awards for Best Play.
The two-part drama was produced at Intiman Playhouse under the direction of Warner Shook during the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
Intiman produced Kushner's revised version of his play "Homebody/Kabul" earlier this season.
