Drink up: Oktoberfest returns to Fremont

The Fremont Oktoberfest returns for its seventh year of microbrews and music Friday, Sept. 19, through Sunday, Sept. 21.

Again taking place at the Solstice plaza and Adobe surface parking lot next to the Aurora Bridge, Oktoberfest will feature such crowd favorites as the street fair, the beer gardens, live music, the PCC Kids' Club and the Texas Chainsaw Pumpkin Carving Contest.

New this year is the Brew Ha-Ha 5K Run/Walk, which will take place Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The race will begin at the "Waiting for the Interurban" statue at North 34th Street. Seasoned beer drinkers are eligible for a head start in the Brew Ha-Ha if they quality for the Beer Belly division (200 pounds for men and 160 pounds for women).

The Stranger Microbrew Garden will open at 10 a.m. for race registration ($20 for advance registration and $25 on day of race). Discount entries to the Microbrew Garden are available to Brew Ha-Ha participants.

Admission to Oktoberfest is free, but those wanting to drink beer must be at least 21 years old and have a valid ID.

Designated drivers will receive free soft drinks, and safe rides home are provided to those in need.

For those too young to enjoy beer, the Fremont-based Real Soda will have soft drinks in the Root Beer Garden. Also, B.F. Day Elementary School will have many kids' activities in PCC Kids' Club, including zucchini car races, face painting and bead making.

Proceeds from the weekend's festivities will benefit the Fremont Chamber of Commerce.
