Gang Unit investigates shooting in Magnolia

The Seattle Police Department's Gang Unit is investigating a Friday night shooting in the parking lot next to the Soundtrack Bar & Grill across the street from the Magnolia QFC, according to SPD spokesman Sean Whitcomb.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, was shot around 9:45 p.m. on July 22 in the right arm, in the left leg and several times in the abdomen, Whitcomb said.

Police have a possible name for the alleged shooter, a man a witness saw holding a semi-automatic handgun, Whitcomb added. The shooting followed an argument that turned physical between the suspect and victim inside the bar, he said. "It's unknown what started the argument."

Whitcomb said other bar patrons separated the pair, but it wasn't a major disturbance, according to a regular customer who was there that night and spoke on condition of strict anonymity.

"There was no reason to think anything was going to happen," the regular said. But the suspect followed the victim out a side door to the bar's parking lot, the regular added. "As soon as he (the suspect) walked out, the shots rang out - pop, pop, pop, pop, pop!

"I was scared to death," said the regular, who added that some customers dove for the floor when the shots were fired. However, several members of a sports team in the bar ran outside almost immediately after the shooting to find out what was going on, the regular added.

"Wasn't nobody out there (during the shooting)," the regular said, "but we all have a pretty good idea who it (the shooter) was. He comes there all the time."

That is, he came there all the time until about two weeks before, when the man was 86'd for an incident involving a gun, according to the regular. But the man had been allowed back into the bar the night of the shooting, the regular added.

Whitcomb from SPD said the victim was shot getting into or standing next to his car in the parking lot. He is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Whitcomb said on Monday this week. "We're definitely working the case," he added.
