Grants awarded to children's programs

The Seattle Foundation has announced $100,000 in grants to the Children's Museum, Pacific Science Center and Seattle International Children's Festival to support the diversity of programs providing valuable learning experiences for children in King County. Awards to these organizations, all located at Seattle Center, are part of 46 grants totaling $1,034,903 in third-quarter giving from the foundation's Community Grantmaking Program. Grants range from $1,000 to $75,000.

"The Children's Museum, Pacific Science Center and Seattle International Children's Festival offer a wealth of out-of-school learning opportunities that challenge kids to stretch their imaginations and develop deeper understandings of the world around them," said Phyllis Campbell, foundation president/CEO. "The Seattle Foundation is proud to support these organizations that are providing key ingredients to the safe and healthy development of our children."

The Children's Museum, which received a grant of $35,000, works to connect children and adults with the arts, cultural traditions and each other through hands-on, interactive exhibits. Museum exhibits allow visitors to experience life in other countries, climb a mountain, be a radio disc jockey or play inside the body of a whale. The museum also works with schools to enrich curriculum, runs arts outreach programs at NewHolly and Rainier Vista public housing communities and offers summer camps and workshops for children and parents.

A $50,000 grant was awarded to the Pacific Science Center, which works to increase community awareness, understanding and appreciation of science, mathematics and technology through interactive exhibits and programs. The Science Center's permanent exhibits include the Tropical Butterfly House & Insect Village, Tech Zone, Dinosaurs: A Journey Through Time and Water Works. During the past year, 1.1 million individuals participated in Science Center programs.

The Seattle International Children's Festival, recipient of a grant of $15,000, celebrates world cultures through the performing arts and is dedicated to the transcendence of cultural, racial, economic and political barriers. SICF commissions both international and regional artists to create new works for young audiences. Although best-known for its annual six-day event offering more than 70 performances by artists from around the world, the festival also provides international, multidisciplinary arts programming for children, teachers and the general public year 'round.
