LETTERS | Readers angry with paper's 'shank' story II

I just read the article about Madrona K-8 in the Madison Park Times. I was disappointed to see that you used a prison term "shank" to describe the object used in the incident at Madrona. Clearly, the incident is disturbing and hugely problematic, yet I have no doubt that it will be addressed with rigor by the school and the district.

Those of us with children in public schools (I have two) are working very hard to improve our schools and to restore the reputation of these battered institutions. We need help from the media, and by this I mean careful reporting. While I support your coverage of the incident, your choice of words does not help the greater cause.

I would love to see more coverage on issues like Race to the Top dollars and our state's effort (or lack thereof) to qualify, looking at seniority vs. merit, more information on the teachers' union, the upcoming levy and/or articles on what's going on in the schools in your area that is positive.

Please consider more articles that are informative and help the community understand why education is so important.
