LWTC mounts restaurant capital campaign

Visit Bistro International, Lake Washington Technical College's restaurant, on any day it's open and you'll find an assortment of people - faculty and staff, college guests, students, alumni, construction workers and others from the public at large. The Bistro plays an important role, from being the front door to the college to a valuable training ground for students pursuing careers in culinary arts.

But the Bistro has been unchanged for almost 20 years, and it's showing its age. The college feels it does not provide the level of training facility that equals the quality of instruction.

That's why Lake Washington Technical College and the Lake Washington College Foundation are undertaking a $300,000 capital campaign this fall to remodel the restaurant. The floor, ceiling, tables and chairs, booths and equipment will be remodeled, replaced or upgraded.

There will be a new entrance with a hostess stand, and outdoor seating will add to the capacity of the restaurant. A whole new professional and attractive ambience will be created.

The campaign will include a number of events that will be open to the public. John Sarich, culinary director of Chateau St. Michelle, is honorary chair for the campaign.

According to college president Dr. Michael Metke, the campaign will be a challenge, given the state of the economy, but a necessary step.

"We've seen enrollment in the program go from 46 to 60 students this past year," Metke said. "We've also recently received accreditation from the American Culinary Federation. Last spring our students took the Bronze Medal at a state-wide competition sponsored by the same group. It was the first time they had ever competed. So we are going to keep the wheels moving forward."

"The college," says Metke, "is committed to partnering with the community and business partners to transform a good program into a truly great one."
