Located inside the Pike Place Market, just across from Ulies Sausage and Pure Food Fish Market is the best place in the entire universe to get lunch for under ten bucks. Mark and Shane grill some of the best tasting fish in Seattle. The Market Grill prides itself on freshness. This place is amazing. A huge, perfectly prepared piece of fresh fish served on quality, fresh baked baguette with a bounty of fresh fixings, like rosemary mayo, fresh grilled onions and hand-cut roma tomatoes, to name a few. If a sandwich is not your thing, they will gladly serve it to you on a bed of mixed greens or steamed rice, but take my advice, no matter how messy, the sandwich is worth it. And if itÕs cold out, grab a cup of their homemade clam chowder. ItÕs hearty and unique. I think it might be the dill, but there is something special in that broth that makes it a perfect companion for the sandwich.
The Market Grill has a loyal following. One of my best friends quit his dot-com job two years ago and decided to teach abroad in Thailand. I think it was a good idea for him as he is a wandering spirit, a nomad with a vast mind. Plus, he was just plain sick of the rat race of corporate America. My traveling comrade wandered all about Asia, India and Europe overpopulating his taste buds with some of the best of the best foods from across the globe. We kept in touch over email and I was envious of his adventures and decadent pleasures. But I had one reprieve, one little breath of freshness that I could possess, that my friend couldn't have along his bountiful road of exotic, delicious foods: The Market Grill.
As my friend neared his last days of travel and he sent me his final email from abroad, he wrote, ÒÉ after you pick me up, can we please stop and see Shane and Mark. I need a blackened halibut with the works. I've been dying for one since I left.
Now, you might think I'm biased, Òpshaw,Ó you might say, ÒHe just says itÕs the best place in the universe because itÕs in his neighborhood,Ó but donÕt take my word for it. National publications have given great accolades to this small, ten-stool establishment. Big name musicians and comedians ventured down to 1509 Pike Place #3 to feed their fishy addictions before performing. And, most importantly (in my mind), my friendÕs only wish upon return from Thailand wasnÕt to see his mother or gaze upon Mt. Rainier. He simply wanted a sandwich from the Market Grill.
