No mean streets

Christine Schaefer and Bruce Swee were among the winners of a citywide contest for the most impressive streetside gardens. Their plantings in the traffic circle at Warren Ave. N. and Newell St., a project they undertook three years ago, include 15 types of drought-tolerant plants.

Biz Alpaugh took a third place for her 12-foot-wide traffic circle at Nob Hill Ave. N. and Blaine St. In the words of neighbor Celia Matson, who nominated Alpaugh's garden, "Seattle would be the most beautiful city in the country if all our traffic circles looked like this!"
