North Rose Hill

Hello neighbors and happy days! I think April and May are my favorite months of the year. I love the changing of the seasons with the leafing and flowering of all the trees, shrubs and flowers. Even more, I love the sounds and smells and the longer and warmer days.

Not only that, but April is birthday time for me and two of my three kids. When everyone was younger, we used to pick a day in April to have a party for the three of us. By having our party on the same day we saved on all the time it took to get the house and yard prepared for the party, decorating and cleanup.

We would start with my daughter's, then merge into Ian's and then host mine in the evening. By that time we had quite a crowd. Quite an event in our small town (Etna) in northern California. If you've ever heard of Etna (in Scott Valley just south of Yreka), let me know.

NRH NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION NEWS

April is the month when the neighborhood association holds their board meeting. The general meeting is scheduled for May 21 at 7 p.m. Currently, the agenda will include:

❚ A report on the Forbes Lake Water Quality study from 2006.

❚ A visit by the Kirkland Police Department to listen and speak to neighborhood concerns.

❚ A report on what is going on along I-405

❚ And an update from the city on the Neighborhood Connection Grants Program. Margaret Carnegie, the chairperson, and her board of directors are doing a great job of scheduling interesting presentations with lots of interaction among participants.

124TH AVENUE CLEANUP

In early April a group of volunteers (your neighbors) including; Mary- Alyce Burleigh, Jim Lauinger, Sonnet, Riley, Tom and Jean Hodgson, Tony and Mitch Wright, Colleen McCarthy, Milt and Carole Olson, Ken and Carol Nielsen, Mike Stults and Margaret Carnegie met to clean up trash on 124th Avenue from N.E. 80th Street to 116th Avenue N.E. A total of 12 bags of garbage were collected, in addition to a computer monitor and some tires.

All in all, a light collection compared to other events. Could it be that drivers are more considerate and not tossing as much trash out their windows as before? Perhaps, more likely is that our repeated efforts have begun to make a difference along 124th. Next time, if we can get more volunteers to help we can increase our range and include other parts of the neighborhood, perhaps along 128th Avenue?

WOODLANDS PARK SUMMER WORK PARTY

July 14 tentatively has been scheduled as a day for neighbors to gather together at Woodlands Park Playground to put a coat of sealer on the wood structures of the playground. Please mark your calendars. A good turnout will make quick work of this critical maintenance task. July 28 will be reserved if weather prevents sealing on that day.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

A big thank you to Dunlap Harris, who has undertaken a major effort to remove invasive weeds from Woodlands Park. His work, along with the efforts of others, has made a big improvement in the health and appearance of our park. Many thanks to Dunlap.

KIRKLAND COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL IS 60 YEARS OLD

The Kirkland Cooperative Preschool is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. [See feature story on page 3.] Mandy Doering, the publicity coordinator, informs me they are planning a carnival event and picnic on June 2 from 12-3 p.m. at Lake Washington Union Methodist Church (7525 132nd Ave. N.E.). The event is open to all alumni.

For the 50-year anniversary, the Kirkland Courier ran an article on the school, including its beginning in a chicken coop. This should be a great event since there are many residents in Kirkland over the past 60 years who have attended the school. Hope you all can make it. If you need more information please contact Mandy at: mandy.doering@gmail.com.

The Kirkland Fire Department is sponsoring CERT Training on the following dates: May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and June 3. Please contact Robin Paster at 587-3659 or rpaster@ci.kirkland.wa.us.
