Old growth, new learning

Fifth-graders from Van Asselt Elementary School took to the wilds of Seward Park last Friday, March 12 to apply some of what they had learned in the classroom through the Woodland Park Zoo's 'Wild Wise' program. The kids spied a soaring eagle through binoculars and, in the park's wooded interior, they captured insects in 'bug boxes' with magnifying lenses molded into the lids (strictly catch and release) and got a lesson in forest ecosystems. Shane Farnor, the Wild Wise Outreach Educator, told the youngsters how fortunate they are to have 'one of the last, best examples of old-growth forest left in King County' right here in our part of the city. He also pointed out how invasive plants and animals threaten to take over habitat from native species.[[In-content Ad]]
