Oregonian takes first ahead of Seattleite in Danskin Women's Triathlon

Erin Ford of The Dalles, Ore., claimed victory in front of more than 4,000 women participating in the Danskin Women's Triathlon held at Genesee Park on Sunday morning. Ford's finishing time of 1:02:08 was more than three minutes faster than her closest competitor, Teresa Nelson from Seattle, who finished with a time of 1:05:56.

The Danskin Women's Triathlon/Seattle Race and Expo were held in Genesee Park on the shores of Lake Washington on Aug. 16-17. The race started at 6:45 am with distances consisting of a half-mile swim, 12.4-mile bicycle ride, and 3.1-mile run.

The race marked the 16th consecutive year Seattle has hosted the Danskin Women's Triathlon Series. The Seattle race was the seventh in the eight race series. For the past 19 years, the Danskin Triathlon Series has held the world's largest and longest running multi-sport Series.

"Every year the Seattle race has provided a great race for Danskin," said Maggie Sullivan, Danskin Triathlon Series director. "This is always one of our largest races and the enthusiasm of the participants is incredible."

Robin White of Sammamish finished third with a time of 1:08:31, and Kathy Morrison of Kent came in fourth with a time of 1:09:47. Tanis Keenan of Delray Beach, Fla., rounded out the top-five with a time of 1:09:58.

The Danskin Series is a combination .75-kilometer (half-mile) swim, 20-kilometer (12.5 mile) bicycle ride and 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) run. It has become a fixture in women's competitive and multi-sport events throughout the country. The other races occur in Florida, Texas, Southern California, Colorado, Illinois, New England and New Jersey.

Danskin Series veteran and Spokeswoman Sally Edwards has taken part in every race since the series began in 1990. She will race in each event this Season, finishing last to ensure no else is last. Edwards has competed in 16 Ironman distance triathlons and holds the Ironman Master's world record.

The Danskin Women's Triathlon Series is open to females aged 14 and older. Participants elect to do the race individually (with age group categories in five-year increments), or as part of a relay team (two or three women completing the three segments). There is even a mixed-age group category that allows for multigenerational teams of friends or family to race.

The Danskin Women's Triathlon Series works closely with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to raise both funds and awareness for breast cancer. Five percent of all entry fees received from the races support the foundation. In addition to this corporate donation, 100 percent of funds raised by participants through the Danskin Women's Triathlon Series Pledge Program will be directed to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the National Association of Team Survivor, a non profit organization that provides free group exercise, health education classes and support programs for women who have a present or past diagnosis of cancer.[[In-content Ad]]
