Garfield HS to host family symposium Saturday

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) families, students, staff and community members are invited to participate in the Building Bridges for Summer Learning family symposium on Saturday, May 17 at Garfield High School (400 23rd Ave.).

Those attending can learn more about Common Core state standards for English and math, coming to Seattle Public Schools in 2015, and can even take the new Smarter Balanced exam that will be rolled out districtwide in spring 2015.

The goal of the May 17 symposium, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is to support families in their students’ academic success. SPS will offer workshops and other resources for families and community partners to help support student academic achievement at home and in the community. Interpreters will also be provided.

Families will learn how to support their children in the areas of early learning, math, reading and writing, English-language learners, special education, making the transition from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school, and opportunities in career and technical education.

Families can also participate in a Parent/Family Leadership Development workshop to explore opportunities to partner with their schools and the district.

The symposium also includes a resource fair with community booths, plus a light breakfast and lunch and free supervised child care.

For those needing transportation, school buses will pick up families from the following locations:

•8:30 a.m. at NewHolly parking lot (7054 32nd Ave. S.);

•8:45 a.m. at Northgate Elementary School (11725 First Ave. N.E.) and Broadview-Thomson K-8 School (13052 Greenwood Ave. N.);

•9 a.m. at Bailey Gatzert Elementary School (1301 E. Yesler Way) and Rainier Vista (at the junction of 29th Avenue South and South Genesee Street).

Return trips will occur immediately following the event.
