I read with interest the article on the Oda Apartments’ drama with Cadence Real Estate, featured in the July 2014 issue of your paper (“Oda Tenants Move After Rent Increases”). Annie Wilson interviewed me for the article, which seems to be mostly accurate, although some details were left out.
What I also tried to point out to Ms. Wilson was the astonishing arrogance and rudeness with which Cadence Real Estate treated all the old residents of the building — not unlike what an army does when it wants to replace the population of a conquered territory: Phone calls to their office went unanswered; messages were not returned — even emergency night messages were ignored, when the heat stopped working (this was in March).
Granted, the old furnace had seen better days, but that…[allowed] Cadence to [enter] all our living spaces and work on installing their new electric-heating system, while ignoring our immediate needs. (As assistant manager of the building for the old owners, I went directly to Sound Oil and got them to fix the furnace.)
I have dealt with building owners and managers all my life, and I have always been treated with courtesy and kindness. Cadence Real Estate is the one outfit that I would single out for total lack of elementary courtesy, for selfishness and for greed — shame on them.
