The closure, which could start as early as Monday, Aug. 31, if weather allows, will allow workers to extend the overpass northward and make room for a new westbound off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard.
During the six-month closure, bicyclists and pedestrians crossing SR 520 in the Montlake area will detour to a newly widened Montlake Boulevard sidewalk via East North Street.
The 24th Avenue East overpass closed to vehicular traffic last fall, so motorists should not be affected by the closing of the street’s bicycle and pedestrian path.
The bike path will reopen when the new 24th Avenue off-ramp is completed.
After the new 24th Avenue off-ramp opens in early 2016, the existing westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard will be removed. That existing ramp passes through the Washington Park Arboretum.
