In the article “Sawant, Banks shift focus to District 3 general election” (September 2015), I was pleasantly surprised to learn of [Kshama] Sawant’s refusal of corporate donations for her campaign.
Unfortunately, I know that most candidates will not adhere to such upstanding values and will be strongly influenced by the will of corporate interests. The draw of the carrot is too tempting for many other candidates, which puts representatives at a disadvantage.
Some things in life aren’t fair, but that doesn’t mean we should tolerate the injustices we can change. Let’s encourage more candidates to run campaigns like Sawant’s, by voting “yes” on Initiative 122, Honest Elections Seattle.
