After a very busy summer, McGilvra Elementary School (1617 38th Ave. E.), which is celebrating 100 years, is back in full swing.
Summer activities included major school renovation, literacy training and math training for nearly all of the teachers.
Student enrollment is at 281. The teaching staff has changed slightly, with the addition of Stacy Mitchell, new fourth-grade teacher, and Marika Fagan, the new art teacher.
Right around the corner is the annual Run-A-Thon. All funds raised from this student-led event go toward meeting educational needs. Major and in-kind sponsors include Bert’s Red Apple, Denali Fitness, Girlie Press and Carol Hoffman Design. Join in cheering of the runners as they race around the school on Oct. 16, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Coming up shortly is the Harvest Dance on Oct. 23, followed by the Holiday Outreach, benefitting our community in need.
Round one of an all-school food drive to support the newly launched school-break food backpack program begins the first week of November, followed by the Mitten Project, in which gift cards are donated to families who can use a little extra help around the holidays.
It’s an auction year. Don your race hats and meet us March 26 at Showbox SoDo (1426 First Ave.) for this much-anticipated event. Contact Candace and Cathy for sponsorship opportunities or donations at fundraising@mcgilvrapta.org.
