Kids can get free tote bag with new library cards

Children ages 6 and younger who sign up for their first library card from The Seattle Public Library will get a free tote bag from the Friends of The Seattle Public Library.

The free “My First Library Card” tote bags, which also include an owl bookmark, are made possible by a Friends donation. The bags specifically fit picture books.

A Library card is free for any child who lives or goes to school in the library’s free service area, which includes several library systems in Washington. Any child whose parent or caregiver works or owns property in the Library’s service area may also apply.

Parents or caregivers can apply for a children’s Library card with two easy steps:

Print and fill out an application form; and

Bring the completed form and the child to any location of The Seattle Public Library.

In addition, a librarian will sign up children ages 6 and younger for library cards and award the special bags at the Friends of the Library’s Big Fall Book Sale on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Friends developed the totes to celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month. The goal is to increase the number of people who have library cards so they can take advantage of all of the library’s resources.
