Garfield High School (400 23rd Ave.) won the Orca Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), in late February.
The Orca Bowl, which took place at the University of Washington, tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, team-challenge questions.
Garfield will now compete against 24 other regional champions in the 19th-annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl on April 21 through 24 in Morehead City, N.C. The theme of the 2016 NOSB is “Our Changing Ocean: Science for Strong Coastal Communities.”
Jonathan Stever coaches the Garfield team, which includes captain Declan Farr and members Allison Gibbons, Conor Gormally, Henry Hayes, Dane Lucas and Alex Miller.
