Summer's almost over: Here are the new school bell times around Madison Park

It's hard to believe summer's almost over. But the first day of class for students on Seattle Public Schools campuses is less than three weeks away, on Sept. 7.

With the new school year upon them, school officials are scrambling to remind parents of new school start and end times in the 2016-2017 school year. The district sent out reminder letters in six different languages at the beginning of August. 

In November 2015, the Seattle School Board voted to start the school days of its high schools, most of its middle schools and a handful of K-8 schools at 8:45 a.m., in response to research on the health benefits of giving adolescents more time to sleep. Many elementary schools will begin earlier under the new schedule.

"Research has shown that teenagers benefit from later start times resulting in more sleep, better health, reduced discipline and improved truancy rates," Assistant Superintendent Pegi McEvoy wrote parents.

In Southeast-Central Seattle, six campuses will be affected by the bell time changes.

Along with all other Seattle high schools, Garfield, Seattle World School and The Nova Project will begin the school day at 8:45 a.m. and end it at 3:15 p.m.

Madrona K-8 will begin the school day at 7:55 a.m and end it at 2:25 p.m. Leschi and McGilvra elementary schools will begin the day at 7:55 a.m. and end it at 2:05 p.m.
