Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is making several upgrades to a water line on East Madison Street between McGilvra Boulevard East and 41st Avenue East that will require a water shutdown overnight on Sunday, Jan. 24. Work involves cleaning and lining the water main. These improvements will increase fire-flow protection in the neighborhood.
Construction during the project consists of staging equipment and installing temporary water mains along the curbs on Madison Street; cleaning and lining of the water main will follow. The entire project will take about two months to complete.
Crews will work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. (Occasional night and weekend work may be required for certain work activities. Advanced notice will be given.)
Homes and businesses can expect:
•Pavement excavation, construction noise, dust, vibrations and street restoration.
•Lane closures, slowed vehicle traffic and possible detours.
•Parking restrictions.
•Temporary water shutdowns, with impacted residents notified in advance.
•Possible discolored water after a water shutdown — The discolored water is temporary, will clear on its own and is safe to drink.
The water shutdown in Madison Park that had been previously scheduled for Saturday night, Jan. 23, has been shortened.
Instead of water being shut off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, water will be shut off at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24, to accommodate the businesses in the area. Water is scheduled to be back on for all customers by 5 a.m. on Jan. 24.
Customers impacted by this shutdown should have received a written notice from SPU on Jan. 15.
When the water is turned back on Sunday morning, residents in the neighborhood, including those who did not have their water shut off, may experience discolored water temporarily. If this occurs, customers are asked to run their cold water for few minutes until it runs clear.
A second water shutdown is scheduled to occur in Madison Park the following weekend (from Saturday night, Jan. 30, until early morning Sunday, Jan. 31). This shutdown will impact a smaller group of mostly residential customers.
Affected customers will receive written notification (a door hanger) with details from SPU by Friday, Jan. 22.
