Garfield students win Martin Luther King School Dream Foundation scholarships

Two Garfield High School students have been awarded a portion of available 2016 scholarships from the Martin Luther King School Dream Foundation.

D’Atray Walker and Desiree Washington were each awarded $1,500 to apply to post-secondary school.

They — and six other scholarship recipients from Center, Cleveland, Franklin and Renton high schools — were honored at a banquet held May 17 at Mount Zion Baptist Church on 19th Avenue, just south of East Madison Street. Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins gave a brief speech and Seattle Colleges Chancellor Jill Wakefield congratulated each of the recipients.

The scholarship was established in 1994 by Martin Luther King Elementary School teacher Jan Lind-Sherman and her husband Vaughn Sherman. The couple gifts scholarships to applicants who are students of the elementary who have been accepted to a post-secondary school, written an essay about their dreams for their career and future, and can document 20 or more community service hours completed during high school.

This was the penultimate year for scholarships to be awarded. The final Dream Foundation scholarships will be given in 2017.
