4Culture announces 2007 Arts Special Projects program

4Culture recently announced the 2007 Arts Special Projects program, a funding opportunity for individual artists and organizations. The Arts Special Projects program includes three categories: Individual Artists Program, Arts Organization Program and Community Arts Initiative. The deadline for applications is March 26.

The Special Projects Individual and Arts Organization Programs encourage innovation in all disciplines, with awards made based on artistic excellence.

The Community Arts Initiative ensures that quality arts programming is available to communities in every corner of King County. Support is available for projects in two categories: development of arts programs in communities without established local arts agencies; and development of arts programs by community organizations targeting a specific underserved ethnic, cultural or geographic group.

Free public workshops will be held, offering prospective applicants an opportunity to meet with program staff and other applicants, understand specific guidelines and be taken through a step-by-step review of the application process.

Workshops will take place on selected Thursdays from Feb. 15 to March 22, 1 - 2 p.m. at 4Culture's offices located at 101 Prefontaine Pl. S.

Following the last application deadline in 2006, 85 individual artists and arts organizations were awarded a total of $234,969 in support from the Individual and Arts Organization Programs for projects throughout King County. Award amounts ranged from $850 to $8,000.

Community Arts provided $36,400 in support to eight projects in 2006. In many cases, this funding served as "seed money," or helped to leverage additional funding from a variety of sources. Award amounts ranged from $400 to $8,000.

Guidelines and applications, which include more information about eligibility and review criteria, are available online at www.4culture.org. All applications are reviewed through a peer panel review process. Artists, arts specialists and community representatives from around King County evaluate applications based on a set of published criteria. Panel recommendations are submitted to the 4Culture Board for final approval.
