Celebrating Kwanzaa

Seattle Postmaster Katherine S. Nash and Ron Jenkins, senior director of the Meredith Mathews East Madison YMCA, unveiled the new 37-cent, first-class Kwanzaa stamp (above) as part of the YMCA's annual Kwanzaa celebration on Dec. 18.
During the nonreligious, African-American celebration, which usually takes place over seven days, James Ward III (at left) lit one of the seven candles, while Briana Junior looked on.
Each candle represents one of the seven principles prevalent in African culture: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.[[In-content Ad]]
