Washington Women In Need (WWIN), a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to low-income women in the state of Washington, last week announced its new executive director, Deborah Cushing of Magnolia.
"The board of directors and I are pleased to welcome Deborah Cushing as our new executive director," said Robin Carey, WWIN board president. "Deborah has a special heart for helping women and their families, and she brings a wealth of experience in running a community service organization such as WWIN.
"We are thrilled with her commitment to helping women in need," she added. Cushing has served in community service programs throughout her life, and has volunteered for many organizations benefiting women and families, including the Northwest Children's Fund and the Children's Alliance.
"I was drawn to Washington Women in Need because of the tools and opportunity they provide to truly empower women to make significant changes in their lives," Cushing said. "It is a unique organization in that we are providing for un-met needs in the state of Washington. I am so proud of this organization for their commitment to women and the vision of its founder, Julia Pritt.
"I look forward to working with the fantastic staff, board of directors, donors and volunteers to continue to meet our goal of providing for more and more women each year," she added.
After spending 15 years practicing law, Cushing decided to take a new direction in her professional life and earned her executive master's degree in non-profit leadership from Seattle University. From there, she served as the executive director of the Pioneer Square Community Development Organization, working on neighborhood revitalization issues.
Cushing also serves on the board of directors for Washington Attorneys Assisting Community Organizations (WAACO), an organization that assists charitable and community-based nonprofit corporations to obtain free legal assistance on business-related matters.
Cushing received her law degree from Wayne State University Law School in Michigan and received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College.
Founded in 1992, Washington Women In Need provides education and health care assistance to low-income women who are at least 18 years of age and are residents of Washington. Washington Women In Need provides funding to more than 300 new women each year, and has funded more than 3,500 women since 1992.
