Madison Park Council looks to reclaim Madison Street end

The Madison Park Community Council (MPCC) has been very busy these last few months. The Communications Committee, currently chaired by Kate Hoyte, has designed and established a new website. Lindy Wishard, the designer, has done a great job and given it a fresh, new and user-friendly look and feel.

To find out what the MPCC is doing, and to stay current with your community, sign up for the newsletter at www.madisonparkcouncil.org. You will get an immediate response to your request and receive monthly updates. The committee is also exploring the addition of a community forum (modeled after the Yahoo group). The forum would be the location to post and discuss community concerns before forwarding them to the council for action.

The Madison Street End Committee, chaired by Kathleen Stearns, was established because we saw an opportunity to reclaim the end of the street with the proposed construction at the site of the old ferry terminal building. In cooperation with the new owners, the developer, Seattle City Parks and the Department of Natural Resources, the committee has researched the ownership of the land. As a result, the committee has developed a phased project plan and will shortly be dealing with design proposals. This is a very exciting project. Stay tuned for more.

The Pedestrian Safety Committee is responsible for bringing the deteriorated and damaged crossing walk signs to the attention of the city. We have the new larger chartreuse signs that call attention the locations of the crosswalks. They also helped us get funding and assistance from multiple city entities for the installation of the radar speed-sign on Madison near the entrance to the business district. It has calmed the traffic and reduced the average speed.

However, our work is not finished because a pedestrian was hit again last month. We hope to be a pilot for a project that will involve placing another crosswalk sign in the median near the business district.

The Graffiti Rangers are continuing to be very busy controlling the graffiti in Madison Park. Please refer to the November issue of the Madison Park Times for more.

According to a recent study published in LifeScience, signs of disorder, such as graffiti and litter, open the door to individuals breaking other rules and norms. It's nice to be validated once in a while. To report graffiti call 684-7587.

The Streetscape Committee, chaired by Carol Simon, has received a second neighborhood grant for the continuation of repairs to the sidewalks and replacement of trees in the business district. They have met with the Seattle Department of Transportation to determine the next steps.

The Wireless Network Committee has received a proposal for the phased installation of a WIFI network to cover the business district, the park, tennis court and beach. We will be reviewing the proposal and looking for funding sources.

We still manage to keep tabs on the project to replace the 520 Bridge through our representative, Maurice Cooper.
