NEIGHBORHOOD LINKS | January 2010

Leschi

The Leschi Community Council is sponsoring a public forum on mental health. A panel of mental-health professionals will answer questions about resources, where to seek help and the likely impact of state budget cuts on these services.

The forum will take place Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Area Senior Center, 500 30th Ave. S., one block south of South Jackson Street.

Madison Park

2010 promises to be a very busy (and rewarding) year for us. At the top of the project list is the Madison Street-End Park Expansion Committee project called Love Our Lake Access (LOLA).

Since receiving the Department of Neighborhoods Matching Funds' Small and Simple Grant, we have sent out Requests for Qualifications (RFQ). From the architectural/landscape firms submitting, three or four firms will be selected to receive the Request for Proposal (RFP) and to submit a proposal. Interviews will begin Wednesday, Jan. 6; the architect will be selected mid-January.

Community input on the park design will be gathered from many focus groups throughout February and March. Look for posted community notices with times, dates and locations.

As a fund-raiser, we are selling high-quality caps with the LOLA logo for $20 each. They are available at several local merchants, including Ropa Bella and Madison Park Hardware.

After the crime-prevention presentation by Officer Kinyon last month, and the increase in break-ins over the Thanksgiving holiday, we are considering a formal and coordinated block-watch program in our community. If you have an established program in your area or wish to establish one, please call Ken Myrabo at 322-8501.

Crossing flags continue to disappear. The ideal pedestrian crossing, as we have set up, is six flags (three on each side of the crossing). Periodically, we must re-establish this system because the flags "walk" up and down the street to different locations or are missing.

The crossings we monitor are on East Madison Street at 32nd Avenue East; Broadmoor; East Garfield, McGilvra, McGilvra and Blaine streets;, 41st Avenue East (in front of Chase); and East Blaine Street (in front of Bert's Red Apple). We also recently assisted Madison Valley Community Council to establish the crosswalk flag system at 29th Avenue East.

If you notice missing flags or persons walking away with them, call Ken Myrabo at 322-8501 or Alice Lanczos at 322-4067. Please help us maintain this valuable addition to making our crossings safer.

We are also making progress on re-striping the two blocks of angle-in parking on 42nd Avenue East, north of Madison Street.

If you have ideas for projects or suggestions for improving our neighborhood that you would like us to consider, contact us at: Council@madisonparkcouncil.org or view the Madison Park Community Council website at www.madisonparkseattle.com.

Please attend our meetings the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Madison Park Bathhouse, 1900 43rd Ave. E.).
