Police beat

The following are based on incident reports from the Seattle Police Department's East Precinct. They represent the officers' accounts of the events described.

Trespassing

At 10:20 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, officers responded to a Melrose Avenue East apartment after learning that a man who had previously been issued a trespass admonishment card for the building had returned and come inside.

A manager saw the man and told him to leave. He refused, telling the manager that he didn't care, he was staying even if it meant he would go to jail. The manager then called the police.

When officers arrived, the man became hostile and argumentative. After conversation proved futile, the officers placed the man under arrest.

The man, who is in his mid-50s, was issued an additional trespass admonishment card and later booked into King County Jail.

Assault

Just before 5 a.m. On Thursday, Aug. 28, officers responded to a 12th Avenue convenience store after learning that a disturbance was taking place.

When they arrived they learned that two customers had been fighting inside the store. One had fled the scene prior to the officers' arrival.

The man who remained said he was a taxi driver. He'd been inside the store paying for some gasoline when another taxi driver, a man he knew from work, came up to him. That man said he wanted a ride to his house since the two live close to each other.

The man paying for gas said he couldn't because he was still working and didn't have time for the detour.

The second driver then attacked the first, punching him several times and scratching his face. The first driver fought back and successfully defended himself from further or even serious injury. The second driver then ran out of the store.

Witnesses, including the cashier, said they heard and then saw the fight. But they weren't aware what prompted it because the taxi drivers were speaking in their native language.

The first driver declined medical attention. Officers searched the area for the second driver without success.

Property damage

Just after 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, officers responded to a parking lot on the 400 block of 15th Avenue East. An unknown witness had called 911 to report that a man was bashing at the window of a parked car with a blunt instrument.

When officers arrived they noticed the car in question after seeing several large pieces of concrete on the ground. Looking at the car, they could see scratches to its windows as well as scratches on the car's body.

Inside the car was a large bag. Officers thought the bag might have been the object of an unsuccessful theft, though they could not be sure.

Officers attempted to contact the owner of the car without success.

The caller told dispatch that a car had driven off shortly after he'd seen the damage. Officers searched the area for that vehicle but were unable to locate it.

Jaywalking,drugs

Just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, officers on patrol along the 400 block of Broadway East saw a man cross the street against the Don't Walk sign.

They pulled him over to talk about the jaywalking incident. He became belligerent and argumentative. When he became threatening, the officers took him into custody.

During a search, the officers found plastic bag containing a substance that officers suspected was crack cocaine. A field test confirmed those suspicions.

The man, in his early 30s, was arrested and booked into King County Jail.
