GARFIELD
SCHOLARSHIPS: Four graduating seniors from Garfield High School, 400 23rd Ave., were among 2,500 students from across the country who won $2,500 National Merit Scholarships: Rebecca T. Cohen, Amandine M. Lee, Genevieve M. Lenoir and Anna K. Miller.
MARKETING CONTEST: Garfield's Carol Brown finished third in the Marketing Management event at this year's DECA International Career Development Conference.
HONOR: The Washington Association of Secondary School Principals named Garfield principal Ted Howard as the 2008-09 Distinguished League Principal of the Year for the Kingco 4A League.
He was selected from principals who are members of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's 4A football league.
LESCHI
HONOR: Second-grade Spectrum Blend teacher Heidi Trudel, of Leschi Elementary School, 135 32nd Ave., was recognized as a "Teacher Who Makes a Difference" by Sylvan Learning Center in late February.
For the prize, Trudel was to choose between a trip for two to Hawaii or $1,000.
EAST-CENTRAL SEATTLE
AWARDS: Five local middle-school students received Mayor's Scholar Awards for their service to their respective schools and their communities: seventh-graders Rataya Crenshaw, Taylor Gaston and Maleika Thomas, of Madrona K-8 School, 1121 33rd Ave.; and eighth-grader Ramadan Ahmed and seventh-grader Mohammed Jagana, of Meany Middle School, 301 21st Ave.
Each received $500 toward education or charity.
CERTIFICATION: Five local teachers were among the 58 who earned their National Board Certification in 2008, including Garfield's Bonnie Hungate-Hawk, Meade Johnson and Richard Truax; Leschi's Heidi J. Trudel; and Wendy Miller, of Washington Middle School, 2101 S. Jackson St.[[In-content Ad]]
