Wallingford to start art walk

Starting May 7, local artists will have a new venue to showcase their work. The Wallingford Chamber of Commerce will begin hosting an art walk on the first Wednesday of each month. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. and go until 8 p.m., coinciding once a month with the weekly farmers market at the Wallingford Center, which is starting its third year. The Wallingford chamber has been talking about starting an art walk for about a year and a half, said chamber co-president Kara Ceriello. With the success of the Wallingford Farmers Market, the chamber has started to grow and is looking to take on more events, she explained."Since the farmers market started two years ago, more people have started coming to Wallingford," Ceriello said. "The first chamber meeting of 2008 had more attendees than we've ever had before."OPEN TO EVERYONECeriello said that business participation in the art walk will not be limited to Wallingford chamber members and that anyone interested in having art displayed should contact the Wallingford chamber and the Art Walk committee by e-mail (chamber@wallingford.org).Businesses throughout Wallingford are encouraged to participate, Ceriello said, including those on Wallingford Avenue North, North 45th Street and Stone Way North.More than 20 artists have already contacted the Wallingford chamber about displaying their work during the art walk, said Colleen Kurke, Wallingford Art Walk committee chairperson and owner of Cutz/Wallingford hair salon. The committee also will explore the possibility of showcasing art from children at local schools by talking to art teachers and school administrators, as well as featuring art from seniors in the community, Kurke said."Make it Wallingford Wednesdays," Ceriello said. "Come enjoy the farmers market, and then see the art walk."[[In-content Ad]]
