Youths of the Year: Vanessa Tolson-Hara, 16

Tolson-Hara, a sophomore at Garfield High School, said she is "the product of a broken home, but I am far from broken."

She has been a member of the Rotary Boys & Girls Club in the Central Area for eight years and has become a role model for her peers at church, at the club and at home.

She is president of the club's Keystone Club and is a trained tutor at the club and for the school district's TEAM Read Program, in which she tutors second- and third-graders. She also is a member of the Garfield Pep Band and plays flute for the marching band.

Last year, she volunteered more than 200 hours at the club.

The club "has been there from the beginning, lighting my path," she said.

Tolson-Hara wants to study pediatrics at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
