SCHOOLS UPDATE | May 1, 2014

Conversation with the Clintons

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, her daughter Chelsea Clinton and actress America Ferrera spoke with students at Seattle Girls’ School (2706 S. Jackson St.) on April 17 via a live Skype conversation.

The three offered advice about breaking into male-dominated career fields, telling the students that the solution for gender equity is to be a leader.

The school was one of four schools — and the only middle school — nationwide to participate.

Grandparents Day

McGilvra Elementary School (1617 38th Ave. E.) is inviting students’ guests for the school’s Grandparents and Special Persons Day on Friday, May 9

This is an opportunity for students to introduce their school and share day-to-day classroom activities with their special guests.

Email gilia.angell@gmail.com to add guests to the Evite guest list.

McGilvra’s centennial celebration

McGilvra celebrated its 100th anniversary with its biennial auction on March 22 at Showbox SODO. Close to 300 guests attended, including current families, alumni and incoming kindergarten families.

Ken Carson, who was returning for his fourth McGilvra auction, hosted the night’s events. John Platt and his staff from St. Cloud’s restaurant in Madrona did the catering.

The event had more than 300 items donated from families, local businesses and McGilvra teachers and staff. Some of the more popular items were Principal for A Day, where a student gets to make a new rule for that day, monitor lunch and recess activities. A Seahawks VIP preseason training camp and a shark trip to the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco were also big money-raisers.

McGilvra thanks all of the local businesses that donated to the auction this year. With continued cuts in education, the school relies on donations from parents and community members. More than 75 percent of the classrooms have a student-to-teacher ratio of 29-1. The money raised from the PTA pays for the art program, a part-time school counselor, a math and reading specialist, part-time classroom tutors and technology and library grants.

McGilvra especially thanks its presenting sponsors; Dan and Larry Wilcynski from Wilcynski Partners, Mark Everts from Cobalt Mortgage, Dr. Lora Shahine and partners from Pacific NW Fertility and Chris Husband from CleanScapes. We would like to thank platinum sponsor Shawn Plaster from The Plaster Group, gold sponsor Park Shore Retirement Community and bronze sponsor Dr. Keith B. Wong.

McGilvra also thanks its advertisers Kevin Trombold from Trombold Law, Wally Green from Allstate Insurance and Park Postal.

Hemlock Printing was a major contributor by donating the catalogs and PaperlinX with bid paddles.

Uber car service was instrumental in getting people to and from the auction safely while providing a generous discount to auction ticketholders.

McGilvra also thanks local artist Richard Carl Lehman for use of his beautiful illustration of the school in many auction materials.
