McGilvra springs into action
McGilvra Elementary School’s days are packed full of activity as usual, with a number of mainstay and new events popping up this spring.
Two traditional McGilvra events that continue to be family favorites occurred in March: Bingo Night brought out the neon and ‘80s dance music, while families fiercely battled for bingos and blackouts. Prizes ranged from gift cards, to local eateries, to a Mr. Potato Head.
The whole school celebrated Pi Day with our famous Egg Drop Challenge, a science celebration event that gave students the opportunity to explore their inner physicists. Students created UFO-inspired containers to protect uncooked eggs dropped from an upper-floor window. Not all eggs made it, but a blast was had by all.
A new session of Kids’ Time, McGilvra’s before- and after-school enrichment program, is back in full swing. Classes include Girls Rock Math, martial arts, robotics and Thrive Art. To view current and upcoming courses, go to class.seattle.gov/parks/Activities/ActivitiesAdvSearch.asp.
McGilvra’s Families of Color group had two meetings in March (one focus group and one larger discussion), focused on how to discuss race with children in empowering ways and providing tools to McGilvra families for increasing cultural competency. Renowned local author and speaker Sharon Chang served as moderator.
McGilvra’s biannual auction is just around the corner. Despite generous giving, we’re still in need of larger ticket experience items, such as airline miles, vacation homes, sports suites, etc. If you are interested in donating any such items or in-kind support, email mcgilvraauctiondonation@gmail.com.
The Central District PTA has been focused on safety. Bob Edmiston from Seattle Greenways shared with the committee on how to partner and make walking and biking to school and around the city safer.
Terrie Johnston, Seattle Police Department’s crime prevention coordinator for the East Precinct, will meet with parents from the Central District PTAs to address physical safety to from and at school; car-prowl prevention; workplace safety. She will also share the many police resources available to help keep our children, teachers and staff safe at school.
