MLK alumni to receive scholarships

The Martin Luther King School Dream Foundation will award its scholarships during its banquet on May 17. It will take place form 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church (1634 19th Ave.).

This year’s honorees include Erica Hunter of Center High School, Nicholas Buchanan and Shanel Wofford of Cleveland High School, Montana Houston of Franklin High School, D’Atray Walker and Desiree Washington of Garfield High School and Brandon Barnes and Ilea Roberts of Renton High School.

A Seattle Public Schools administrator will make the congratulatory remarks, followed by Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins and Tayzhon Harris, a 2015 award winner.

The dinner is complimentary; any donations and proceeds from a raffle at the event will go the scholarship fund.

Reservations were requested by May 3; late registrations are still welcome via email to lindsher@aol.com or phone to (425) 478-8174.

Graduating seniors who once attended the former Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Madison Valley are invited to apply for a $1,500 scholarship each year.

Jan Lind-Sherman, who taught at the school until it closed in 2006, started the foundation with her husband after winning a large lottery. The foundation gives post-secondary-education scholarships to students who attended the school. Since 1999, they have given out more than 100 awards, ranging from $1,000 to $3,500.
