Newly elected Seattle School Board director Jill Geary, representing District 3, met with McGilvra Elementary School (1617 38th Ave. E.) staff and parents, as they shared their thoughts and concerns. She also toured the school, commenting on the students’ artwork lining the walls and marveling at the garden.

Geary currently sits on two boards: the Curriculum and Instruction Policy and Operations.

The Wildcat Pantry food drive started in late January, collecting food for students in need. Our generous community typically raises more than what’s needed for ourselves; excess is donated to nearby schools, including Bailey Gatzert Elementary School. (Email community@mcgilvrapta.org for information on how to donate.)

The school commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a student-led assembly focusing on courage and community. Student storytellers shared King’s legacy, opening with the lines that if it weren’t for him, some of the us wouldn’t be at McGilvra today.

A parade of flags celebrated the global community, while students with retro-inspired picket signs shared what “courage” means and others sang.

Bingo Night is Feb. 26. An annual tradition, this family-friendly fun competition brings everyone together over pizza and prizes, as all ages join in yelling “Bingo!”

McGilvra’s biannual auction takes place April 23 at the Showbox SODO (1700 First Ave. S.). The Kentucky Derby theme promises to bring out big hats as we enjoy a special night of music and merriment while raising funds for our kids.
