A revival production of “The Secret Garden” on its way to Broadway will play at The 5th Avenue Theatre this Friday, April 14, to May 6.
The musical, based on the 1910 children’s serial by Frances Hodgson Burnett and adapted for the stage in 1991 by composer Lucy Simon and playwright Marsha Norman, follows an orphaned 10-year-old who finds redemption and happiness for her family in her late aunt’s walled-off garden.
The current production, directed by 5th Avenue’s artistic director, David Armstrong, was produced in conjunction with the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., where it ran from November 15 through January 8, to praise from The Washington Post.
Cast members reprising their roles from the D.C. run include Daisy Eagan (who returns as an adult after winning a Tony Award as Mary Lennox at age 11), Lizzie Klemperer, Josh Young, Charlie Franklin and Sean G. Griffin.
Newcomers to the cast include Tam Mutu as Lennox’s melancholy uncle Archibald Craven, Marianne Owen, Bea Corley as Lennox, Brittany Baratz, Jason Forback, Maya Mainar, Erik Ankrim, Jared Michael Brown, Megan Chenovick, Rachel DeShon, Candice Donehoo, Mary Jo DuGaw, Nina Makino, Matthew Posner and Greg Stone.“Part of the incredible richness of this musical comes from the wonderfully complex characters on the page,” Armstrong said in a prepared statement. “I couldn’t be happier to have such a high caliber cast to bring them all to life.”
