Summer at SAM returns this month

Summer at SAM Presented by PNC Bank, a series of free outdoor events, returns to the Olympic Sculpture Park July 14 through Aug. 20. This is the first time that public programs have been held at the sculpture park since early 2020. To celebrate their return, Seattle Art Museum collaborated with community partners to curate activities and performances combining visual art, music, and community. Summer at SAM programs take place every from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. They are free, open to the public and for all ages.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Thursday evenings feature live music against the backdrop of Richard Serra’s sculpture, Wake; artists and makers leading art-making activities; and a series of food truck partners and SAM caterer MARKET Seattle.

Summer at SAM kicks off on July 14 with an evening produced in partnership with Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery, a multicultural and multi-use art gallery grounded in Chicana/o Latinx arts traditions. The evening features a performance by The Pazific, playing “West Coast Latin Soul,” art-making with artist Eileen Jimenez and food trucks El Cabrito and Hallava Falafel.

Other evenings feature collaborations with One Vibe Africa, with a sneak peek at their Madaraka Festival artists; Sound Off!, the Museum of Pop Culture’s 21- and-under music showcase; Artist Home, presenting sets by singer-songwriter Tomo Nakayama and dance trio Mirrorgloss; arts patronage organization Black Fret, featuring the “gunk-pop” of the Black Ends; and finally, an evening with NW Folklife artists.

Saturdays feature yoga sessions led by 8 Limbs Yoga Centers, Zumba dance- fitness lessons, and interactive drop-in studios with local artists. Select Saturdays also include low-tide pocket beach tours with Seattle Aquarium naturalists and activities with Puget Soundkeeper; Snake River Savers; and Sealife Response, Rehab, and Research.

Though not a part of the Summer at SAM series, the museum is also proud to announce the return of SAM Remix, its 21+ after-hours art experience. Last held November 2019, this Aug. 26 edition at the sculpture park will feature music, art-making and art installations inspired by sculptures in the park and the joy of being outside together. Tickets for SAM Remix will go on sale at a date TBA.
