Burglaries and a late-night cab assault are among the list of the crimes from last month.

Updates from the Leschi, Madison Park and Madison Valley community councils.

REVISITING THE PARK | A renovation revelation

Many of the alleys in Madison Park — in particular, the alley between 42nd and 43 avenues, north of Madison Street — were all dirt surfaces with big chuck holes.

EDITORIAL | The losing proposition

Proposition 1, which proposed to save Metro Transit service and fund road repairs, failed to get support from King County voters in last month’s special election.

SEATTLE SOUNDINGS | Taking voters for a ride

This past month, rideshare companies like UberX and Lyft opened their checkbooks and paid for enough signatures to force a summer referendum on repeal of new City Council regulations that also, coincidentally, legalized their industry.

A MODEST PROPOSAL | About wild Seattle

About 6:20 on an otherwise quiet Thursday morning, nature came to call in the form of coyotes. In short order, they killed the four chickens kept in a small run and coop at my neighbor’s house.

THE BOTTOM LINE | When going home is a crime

When I first heard the news, it did not penetrate: Receiver DeSean Jackson was being released by the Philadelphia Eagles. Then, later that day, I heard why.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Cover art not representative of parties

I was disappointed by your “Dogma of the Democrats” cover art (April 2014). It is perfectly reasonable to point out the challenges of being a conservative and of promoting conservative ideas in overwhelmingly liberal Seattle.

Branching out

Madison Park Tree owner Mark Herkert has been scaling and cutting trees in Madison Park for the last 15 years.

FOOD MATTERS | The gospel according to Luc

It’s a lively block, this stretch of Madison Valley: takeout pizza, takeout teriyaki, a dry cleaners, a French bistro (Voilà!), an Italian bistro (Cantinetta). The fancy French dinner house (Rover’s) is gone, and the pan-Asian cafe (Chinoise) is gone, too.

THE REAL ESTATE CHASE | The longer-term view of real estate

As we often caution, sales statistics for Madison Park can be misleading given that ours is a pretty small market, with relatively few sales in each period. Moreover, the mix of housing in the neighborhood is eclectic, to say the least.

ASK RAY ABOUT REAL ESTATE | Is homeownership a gamble?

Without a doubt, owning a home is one of the smartest and best investments you can make. Your parents knew homeownership was a wise strategy, and so did your grandparents.

The green-eyed monster sees red at Young Republicans party

A group called the Young Republicans used to meet at the top of the Sorrento Hotel in the early 1970s. It was a great way to mingle while taking advantage of the cheap drinks offered. It was important for us guys to take on the air of legitimate Republicans who were not on the prowl for ladies, although that is exactly why we were there. Even if otherwise attached, it was necessary to check out this scene once a month for other possibilities.
